A vast majority of problems with DOT-4L liquid cylinders are directly related to customer tampering with the set screws on economizers and pressure-building regulators. Customer tampering isn’t necessarily done with malicious intent, it’s often a misunderstanding of how the pressure regulator works or an attempt to self-diagnose a potential issue.
Regardless of the intent, the end result is a big headache for the distributor, who has to temporarily decommission the cylinder until it can be reset and tested. Improper meddling with the safety relief devices or regulators can result in grit, insects, dirt, oil, dirty water or other contaminants entering the system, potentially resulting in gas leaks. Not only does this cause service interruption for the customer, it’s costly for the distributor to remove the tank from service, repair and possibly re-plumb it and test it.
The easiest solution is to prevent tampering with a Dewar Regulator Adjustment Lockout. This simple cap encloses the regulator and set screws and can be zip-tied securely shut, providing a visual cue to the end-user that it shouldn’t be messed with. We recommend using stainless steel zip ties as opposed to plastic ties, which become brittle under prolonged sun exposure.
It’s also a good idea to make sure customers have quick access to your contact information should anything go wrong with the tank. Posting a label on the tank with your company name, phone number, and website will save precious time if there’s an emergency with the cylinder.
