Relief Valves & ASME Certification: Why It's Important

cryogenic equipment | cryogenic valves

The term “ASME Certified” gets thrown around a lot in the cryogenic and compressed gas industry. But what does that really mean and why is it important?

What is the ASME?

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) is one of the leading developers of codes and standards for the entire realm of engineering, and has been recognized as a global leader since 1884. ASME standards are developed by a team of over 5,500 volunteer engineers, scientists, government officials and other industry leaders, and are in use in over 100 countries. The ASME library of codes and standards consists of “living” documents, which are regularly updated to reflect changing technology throughout the industry.

ASME Certification and the Compressed Gas Industry

For the compressed gas and cryogenics industry, ASME certification is an important consideration when replacing critical components of a system. For example, bulk tanks such as our Arctic Fox tanks, are required to meet ASME boiler and pressure vessel codes at the installation inspection.

In addition to the initial inspection, valves are required to be inspected or replaced every five years to ensure they meet the ASME code standard and will adequately protect the tank from overpressurization. Though not all bulk tanks are required to follow the ASME boiler and pressure vessel code, it’s good practice to always standardize systems with ASME coded valves.

Herose ASME Relief Valve

Herose ASME Relief Valves are the Most Reliable

Ratermann has a large selection of Herose ASME cryogenic safety valves, all globally certified to meet rigorous standards set by CN (European Committee for Standardization), TR CU (Technical Regulations of Customs Union) and ASME. KAG (Korea) approvals are also in process. Because of their superior design and construction, they are the most reliable valves in use worldwide.

Available in sizes from DN6 to DN50 with a wide pressure range and operating temperatures down to -425F, Herose ASME safety relief valves also come in stainless steel, monel, bronze, and brass to meet a wide range of applications.

Ratermann’s National Board Certification Means Reliable, Quality Service

Ratermann has certification from The National Board, the qualifying organization who handles the approvals for ASME. This means we have the proper certification and test equipment to ensure our customers receive reliable, quality service that meets the ASME standards.

In addition, we have certifications for:

  • UV: Assembler Certification. We are also working on becoming the Herose Authorized Assembler for the United States.
  • TO: Test Only Certification. This allows us to test and re-certify valves that have been removed from service due to their length of time in service. Successful testing allows the valves to go back into service for another five years before replacement or re-testing (provided there are no other problems).
  • VR: Valve Repair. Qualified repair of pressure relief valves.

Ratermann’s O2 Cleanroom is a state of the art facility for cleaning and repackaging valves for O2 service.
